slowing down like snowflakes
“Snowflakes usually fall at an average speed of 1.5 mph. Each one typically takes about an hour to reach the ground. Here’s hoping you can slow down this season, too.” - Britannica
What I’m up to
Floating in the liminal space between Christmas and New Year. I’m pretty sure it’s Monday.
We’re taking our time with sleeping in, all snuggled together and saying, “Let’s not wake until the sun comes up” which isn’t until 8:30am and it’s working. Delight. We’re playing with new Christmas toys and watching holiday episodes of Peppa and Bluey. We’re savoring friend play dates with the ones who are in school full time, making the most of the break. And the kids don’t know it yet, but this year we’re preparing to put glow sticks in our 8pm balloon drop on New Year’s Eve.
What I’m confessing
I wrote 1/3 of a post about coffee gear to buy in Canada. And then I let the post go by the wayside in lieu of taking care of sick kids and preparing for Christmas. Ah, ya win some ya lose some.
But here’s the TL;DR (you didn’t read it, because I didn’t send it!):
If you’re in Canada - Eight Ounce is a great place to get coffee beans and gear
I highly recommend High River’s Hasty Coffee for the best instant coffee you’ll ever taste.
Okay perfect. This version probably saved us both time.
How I’m wintering
Today offered a break from our recent -20 degree Celcius weather, barely hitting 0. It snowed perpetually over Christmas (like glitter falling from the sky!), and it’s slowly melting for now - just waiting for a new fresh blanket to fall soon.
I just purchased new boots with Christmas money; they’re green and pink - adding some colour into my winter wardrobe.
I’m reading books and listening to books and will just about hit 40 books for 2025 - and my goal was 25! The ability to take out audiobooks from the library is a game changer. This has felt cozy - listening to pass the time while doing chores and reading when I would otherwise be scrolling on my phone.
And I’m slowly working my way through a to-do list, with little pressure and expectation. Just what feels right. Yesterday, the cardboard went to recycling and that’s enough.
What I’m leaving in 2025
skinny jeans / shrinking / self-silencing / this vest with a broken zipper / performative productivity / aging gracefully / waiting to feel “ready” before beginning / resentment / over-explaining / pretending i remember someone’s name
What I’m bringing into 2026
adding colour into my wardrobe / turning 40 (!) / fiction writing / using my voice / jewelry that makes me happy / dirty soda / taking up the space where my body resides / slowness / creative play / choosing rest before burnout, not after.
What I’m Googling
what kind of cream to use for dirty soda (i may finally jump on this trend)
overnight baked oatmeal amish (the last word makes sure the recipe is GOOD)
kid-o-bunk portable (saw them at the store and the kids were obsessed)
Until next year,
cer
